RECLAIM-THE-NIGHT1

An important campaign in response to the recent wave of extreme sexual violence against women and girls in the Netherlands.

It is a call to urge all countries that have not yet ratified the Istanbul Convention to do so, and to step up measures to prevent gender-based violence.

Since the violent death of 17-year-old Lisa, who was pulled from her bike after a night out, more and more people, especially women, have expressed their anger about the violence and the ever-present fear over women’s safety. Thus, the Dutch national action ‘We reclaim the night’ was born.

With a special focus on the case of Amparo Oliver Torres.

Amparo Oliver Torres was a 23-year-old student who tragically lost her life in Jávea during the Carnival festivities of 2005. Her body was discovered strangled among orange trees near the event venue. She had met her assailant, a 25-year-old Argentine man, just days before the incident. Witnesses reported seeing her conversing with him that evening, after which she was no longer seen alive .

This case highlights the vulnerability of women to gender-based violence, even in seemingly safe environments. It underscores the importance of vigilance and support systems to protect individuals from such tragic outcomes.

Trigger warning: this raw and unflinching performance may be upsetting for some

Written by Inmaculada Alvear, this poetic drama draws us into the world of a family living each day under the shadow of gender-based violence. The story reveals the inner and outer realities faced by a family enduring such circumstances.

As the title of the play suggests, Five Hundred Metres is the topic of the performance. Over the course of the work, we witness the tragic journey of Antonio, Chiqui, and their daughter María.

This family finds itself confined within that safety distance, striving to lead a normal life. It takes just one minute and forty seconds to walk those five hundred metres — the distance to school, to the underground, to the grandmother’s house, and, above all, the distance between María and her father.

Followed by: a musical performance by Kathleen Misson, accompanied on guitar by Jorge Enriquez Jurado, singing “Malo” by Bebe.

Afterwards, a symbolic walk to the Town Hall, where the institutional manifesto will be read:

  • In Valencian: Benitachell Women’s Association

  • In English: European Union of Women – Marina Alta (EUWMA)

  • In Spanish: Councillor for Equality
